MUNDARING

Located in the  hills, Mundaring is a short 35 minute drive from the City of Perth. The community is warm, friendly, Banner of the Mundaring & District Lions multicultural and welcoming, enriched by the traditions of past generations and days gone by.
Mundaring is home to the amazing engineering feat of the Mundaring Weir, where the Golden Pipeline starts its journey to Kalgoorlie Boulder. Water is pumped 560 kilometres from Mundaring Weir in peaceful Helena River Valley to Kalgoorlie. Following wet winters, the dramatic sight of the Mundaring Weir overflowing draws sightseers and residents alike to the valley.
Mundaring was the haunt of  bushranger Moondyne Joe, who  roamed among the tall jarrah trees and scaled the rocky outcrops of what is now John Forrest National Park on the side of Greenmount Hill. Wildlife abounds and beautiful birds and wildflowers can be found right throughout the Shire. Cyclists and walkers can enjoy the heritage trails running through small picturesque villages including Darlington, Glen Forrest, Parkerville and Chidlow. Horse riding, canoeing or playing  a round of golf is another way to enjoy your time.
Beautiful and wondrous gardens are open to the public in spring and autumn. Cultural, orchestral and pop concerts held in a unique bushland setting are a feature of many summer evenings. The outdoor cinema screens fabulous movies under the stars in the warmer months. In spring the bush is alive with colour, with native flora including kangaroo paws, spider orchids, leschenaultias and hoveas. Visitors can enjoy an early morning walk as the mist rises in the treetops and the joyful laughter of the kookaburra heralds a new day. These are the sights and sounds of the bush which 'feed the souls' of local artists, authors and artisans.
Mundaring's tourism is predominantly nature based, and consequently there are many facilities and outdoor activities to enjoy in the area: walk trails, Lake Leschenaultia, John Forrest National Park, Mundaring Weir and the Golden Pipeline, wildlife sanctuaries and a marsupial hospital.

Lions Golden Gateway An exciting monument to the development of Australia’s West that has benefit for today and tomorrow.

Proposed Golden Gateway at Mundaring Double Click on image for further information and Prospectus

The Lions Golden Gateway Foundation aims to celebrate the innovation and endeavour of people who opened up the land now served by the Golden Pipeline. The Lions Golden Gateway Foundation proposes to build two golden gateway arches, one at Mundaring and one at Kalgoorlie.

These gateway arches have been designed by Joan & Charles Smith, Western Australian sculptors with international experience. The Golden Gateway will be magnificent public art, worthy of the endeavour it seeks to celebrate:

  • The construction of one of the world’s great water supply schemes

  • The development of one of the world’s most famous goldfields

  • The establishment of one of the world’s premier grain growing regions.

It will be an excellent tribute to all the people who have been involved with the land over more than a century.

By undertaking this million dollar project, The Lions Golden Gateway Foundation will assist in promoting public awareness of the enormous efforts and achievements of communities along the pipeline. These communities are currently implementing projects to care for the land that has been harmed by European settlement. The Foundation will also seek the help of young Australians to assist these communities in their endeavours.

The indigenous communities, who cared for the land for 40 000 years before European settlement, are recognised by the Lions Golden Gateway Foundation for their immense contribution to Western Australia. Further involvement of indigenous communities will be encouraged by the Foundation.

The desired outcomes are:

  • World class icon monuments to celebrate the endeavour of the people who were pioneers during the early years of the development of Western Australia - in particular those who constructed the water pipeline, established the wheat-growing regions and created the Kalgoorlie Goldfields.

  • Business development through tourism in Golden Pipeline country.   Increased public awareness of the need to care for the natural environment, especially with regard to land salinity.

  • Life-skills experience for young people in the Wheat-belt and Goldfields.

  • Recognition of the ancient heritage of the indigenous peoples of the region.

The LioDoble click on the Kalgoorlie banner to see an artist's version of the Golden Gateway in Kalgoorliens Golden Gateway Foundation envisages the Golden Gateway being built in 2007 - 100 years since the first wheat shipment from Western Australia, 105 years since the Golden Pipeline was completed and 115 years since the discovery of gold at Coolgardie.

If you like to know more about this unique project - Please double click on the image of the intended Arches. If you would like to see how the Golden Gateway would look in Kalgoorlie, visit the site of the Kalgoorlie Lions by double clicking on their banner above

It would also be appreciated if you could leave us some feedback on our project in our GUEST BOOK

‘ The Lions Golden Gateway Foundation Project ’

1.0  Proposal

‘The Lions Golden Gateway Goldfields Pipeline Community development Fund.’

To establish:

through the process of creating a World-class Icon Monument as a symbolic  focus for major fund-raising annual events to engender and promote  community development within the Goldfields Pipeline region and particularly to support the aims of the Foundation as described below.

 2.0 Purpose

To focus upon: WATER AWARENESS, in relation to:

                       ·        THE STUDY OF THE HYDROLOGY OF THE REGION

·         SUSTAINABLE FARMING PRACTISES.

 Relating to:

                 ·        PROBLEMS OF LAND DEGRADATION OF THE 21st CENTURY.

3.0 Mechanism: The collection and distribution of funds in aid of:

·        Educational Funding for Young Primary Producers in:

          Hydrology

-         Best Farming Practice

-         Ecological studies

-         Conservation

In aid of: Research Projects in relation to above in the form of:

-         Fellowships

-          Scholarships

-         Bursaries

The goal of this Proposal would be achieved by:

The establishment of a world class Lions Club philanthropic Foundation, focused exclusively on aiding the WA  Goldfields Pipeline Region. By means of the  construction of two major landmark ‘Golden Gateways’ at each end of the ‘Golden Pipeline’.

4.0  Golden Gateway Project

4.1 Construction of Gateways

The creation of  two world-class icon monuments in the form of major symbolic landmark structures, inspired by the actual pipeline itself. This would encompass the whole area served by the pipeline and act as a symbolic gateway for the future development of the Region and as a powerful symbol of the Lions Golden Gateway Foundation. While commemorating and celebrating the enormous achievements of those who constructed the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme – 1903, it would also create a great landmark project establishing Australia -wide the pre-eminence of that Project in the development of the Nation, with major tourism potential on a broad scale, while stimulating community interaction locally.

The essence of this concept is to metaphorically mark this present period, at the beginning of the 21st Century, as the transitional point in the re-development of this Region. This acknowledges 1903 as the Year which signaled the genesis of the development of this area by the construction of the Water Supply Scheme. It establishes this moment in time as the ‘Gateway Moment’, to the future evolution of this region, with its mineral wealth, primary industries and interdependent community which is now in crisis. This project targets 2103, the 200th Anniversary of the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme, as the next Centenary goal for the Lions Golden Gateway Foundation to realise its objectives. This will enable it and this whole Region to celebrate the ‘Golden Centenary’, that will have been generated by the establishment of this visionary, philanthropic organisation at this present time.

To mark this great moment, 2003, it is fitting that a Time Capsule  be put in place under each Gateway, to be opened in 2103. In this way we can stand at this moment in time, drawing on the experience of the past while looking through the Gateway to the future.

4.2 The Fundraising Events.

It is envisaged that a great Community Celebration would take place on an annual basis centered on the Gateways along the route of the pipeline. The exact nature and detail of these Community events would have to be developed in association with Tourism and Local Councils. A possible scenario for this would be:

             ·        A Great Race ‘through the Gateways’ involving a ‘Vintage’ theme based on the year 1903, featuring:

-         vintage cars

-         bikes

-         camels

-         horses

-         wheelbarrows

-         running and walking ( fancy dress )

-         Vintage Golden Gateway Ball

All activities combined with Fair Day ‘pageantry’ co-ordinated within the various Communities along the pipeline, attracting major corporate funding.

Major Theme: ‘Water Awareness’.

5.0  NATURE OF PROJECT :envisaged as:

 1)     Complimentary to existing National Trust Golden Pipeline Project

 2)     As a community driven major supporting element with direct benefit to the Community - i.e. funds collected and fed back to the Community via the ‘Lions Golden Gateway Foundation’.

 6.0 PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

Through the utilisation of existing Community infrastructure

                 1)     Lions Golden Gateway Foundation– Prime mover

·        Other Service Clubs

                 2)     Local Government-  All Regional Councils

·        Through the auspices of Community Development Departments.

3)     Federal Government

4)     State Government – Tourism

 5)     Lotteries Commission

                 6)     Private Donations

                 7)     Sales of Project Memorabilia

8)     Private Industries

All the above co-ordinated towards organising:

            1. The establishment of the ‘ Lions Golden Gateway Foundation’

            2. The construction of the Golden Gateways

3.The Annual fundraising events associated with The Golden Gateway Project

4.The dissemination of the funds raised to appropriately selected groups and individuals, at the discretion of The Lions Golden Gateway Foundation.
